Description
Statuette of Buddha Amitayusa in bronze with partial gilding
The earliest mention of Buddha Amitayusa is in the sutra ‘Sukhavati-vuha’ (1st century AD), mentioned as an epithet of Buddha Amitabha (Boundless Light). Already in the IV century Amitayus began to be addressed with pleas for long life and health, and in the Middle Ages in Tibet, Mongolia (especially in the medical practice of lamas) and China (in the Taoist-Buddhist search for the elixir of immortality) the cult of Buddha Amitayus was formed, which became widespread in the XVI-XVIII centuries, and it continues to retain its significance to this day.
The practice of Amitayusa allows us to attain a long, comfortable and healthy life. The main purpose of Amitayusa practices is not only to remove obstacles that can shorten life, but also to attain a state beyond birth and death.
